The Wind Farm Challenge

Before you enter The Wind Farm Challenge

Your next challenge is on the horizon...off the coast of Sussex.

Run by the official Wind Farm Swim organisers, Salty Events, The Wind Farm Swim is the ultimate local challenge.

In 2020, creator Nikki Gatland swam to the Rampion Wind Farm, and back, becoming the first person to do so.  Nikki now invites you to join her out at the wind farm to swim your own way back to land.

The Wind Farm Swim on 16th July is the race series for those who want to complete the return solo and swim between 15min/km and 20 min/km.

The Wind Farm Swim on 27th August is the participation event, for those wanting to take it slower, with the option of relaying with themselves or a fellow swimmer. The pace for the event will be between 20min/km and 25min/km.

There are no relay options available on 16th July - please see event on 27th Aug 2022 for slower pace and relay options.

If you would love to do it but are unable to pay the full amount today, no problem.  We can offer a deposit option with the remaining balance to be paid upon an agreed date. Please drop us an email

This year we are supporting Mind (National) - Mind Brighton and Hove  and donating 20% of our profits to a local project.  The project supports local emergency services workers to improve their mental health and wellbeing through the use of open water. We encourage you to raise additional sponsorship for the fantastic cause, however feel free to raise money for a charity of your choice.

The Challenge

Upon entry you will receive more information about how to complete the challenge.  This includes the need for you to designate a support crew member to meet you on landing, fuelling and hydration advice and training guidance.

You will also be required to submit an open water qualifying swim at least two weeks prior to the event  (2nd July or 13th August).  This needs to be verified by a witness and a recording, such as Strava/Garmin etc.  If you are unable to qualify your swim with a recording, please get in touch to discuss alternative options.

Qualifying swim

For the Race entry on 16th July you are required to complete a single effort swim of at least 6km at or around the designated event pace.

For the relay or solo entry on 27th August, you are required to complete a single effort swim of at least 1 hour at or around the designated event pace.

If you have any problems achieving this or are concerned, please get in contact. It doesn't necessarily mean you will not be able to take part, we may just have to discuss an individual plan for you, to help you achieve your swim.

On the day

We will meet at Sussex Yacht Club for a group briefing.  We will then load the boat and prepare to leave the dock.  We will head out to the wind farm and locate ourselves in the best position based on the sea's conditions.  Once all swimmers are in the water, we will set you off as a group using a loud hooter.  We will be accompanied by a smaller rib which will act as the lead boat. You will follow the direction of the lead boat.  For safety reasons, we ask swimmers to stay as a group.

Every 60 mins, the vessel will pull in front of the pack to allow fuelling. Once completed, swimmers will continue. This will be repeated until all swimmers reach land. Your support crew member will be kept up to date throughout the swim via a WhatsApp group. It will also update them on your anticipated landing location as this may vary due to weather conditions.

Cancellation

If the weather and sea conditions do now allow us to attempt the challenge  we endeavour to make a confirmed decision by 5pm the day before, at the latest.  If we are able to confirm earlier, based on forecast then we will.  We will then discuss the logistics of working with the back up date.

If you are no longer able to attempt the swim, we are unable to exchange places, defer or refund due to insurance cover.
