Bike Bus Leader Training

Bike Bus Leader Training will equip you with all the skills & information to prepare you to lead a Bike Bus in your local area!

Our Bike Bus Leader Training is designed for people aged 18+ who are passionate about active travel, cycling, and making a positive impact in their community.

Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside their team and apply their learning in real life settings — supporting younger riders & contributing to local Bike Bus initiatives.

The training provides the knowledge and practical experience needed to support or lead a Bike Bus — a means of transporting a group of riders, typically children riding to school, on cycles, with pick up points along the way. Learners will be guided by qualified and experienced Jersey Sport Bikeability Instructors, who will take them through a series of engaging, practical units across the course:

Section 1 – Pre Practical Training

We will look at all the pre ride work that needs to be completed before you start the bus. This will include building your team, training & support, duty of care, route planning, risk assessment, external engagement, target group & documentation templates.

Section 2 – Traffic free cycle training

During this section we will look at teaching you how to carry out the relevant checks you need to do before you ride, helmet, clothing & bike check. We will also run through a small ability check.

The below sections happen after your classroom training; this will be discussed in the classroom training.

Section 3 – On road cycle training

This section will see us riding the route you have planned for your bike bus. Survey & re assess any hazards along the route & assess group leading ability along with moving the group sufficiently. Once you complete this session you are ready to lead your bike bus!

Section 4 – Further training – Support & Mentoring

This section is continuous after training. Further training means we will continue to support you on your bike bus journey, provide feedback & celebrate success
